Orion Platinum 7.1 released

So Orion Platinum was released couple of days ago. All went pretty nicely considering the size of the upgrade. Few small issues already reported, but nothing serious what couldn’t wait for next release. One user had problems with Wine (that is Linux) and Orion, but I was able to fix that problem and provide a patch for him. If someone has crash problems when starting Orion and preventing Orion startup, I can provide the same patch, but otherwise the fix will be on next release.

Next will be the Orion Pro 7.1. All of the fixes Platinum 7.1 upgrade should be in Pro too (except for the things not already in Pro of course).

What’s after that someone might ask. Infact we have created list of all requested and insane ideas and that list needs to be sorted out. Most likely next upgrade will address the long due Midiout and handling of Midi devices for better support of hardware synthesizers and different midi controllers (ie. motorized controllers). Atleast those are important for me personally. After all I do have 10 hardware synthesizers and that Tascam US-2400 controller here.

    Hi !

I just downloaded Orion Platinum demoversion last Saturday. I was surprised how easy it was to use and “get in” as a some kind of starter like me. It is my first “real” synthesizer ever. (Well, second if I count my VIC-20. Aldeady as younger I had programmed a little AM-synthesizer to my VIC-20 using only volume register but tuning it very very fast ;) .
Orion Platinum ashtonishes me every day when I try and experiment new delicious extras (strange names, I hardly know what they mean). At the momen’t I don’t need more .. except commercial version which I am now seriously considering to buy..

BTW, my laptop (IMB51e ~1.7 GHz) is sometimes choking (glitch, tick noise) if I import Bach.mid’s and play it using Texas-synth etc. Also some of my composings(Yes, I’ve started) get same problem, CPU gets high 69-99%. Have you any hints ? Is it possible to set off real voice synthesis and to get it just calculate WAV-file (For ex calculates 1 minute piece in 1 hour, for ex terrible amount of voice echo chorus “carpet” backround ;) ?

    Regards,

I suspect you mean with “Texas-synth” the default preset of Toxic 2. I suggest you don’t use Toxic on such slow machine or then increase the latency from the audio output settings. Best would be of course to have external usb/firewire ASIO compatible soundcard with laptop which should ease the CPU slightly, but still Toxic uses quite a lot CPU.

In general Toxic is very CPU hungry, so try WaspXT and WaveFusion instead. And you can always use some low CPU VSTis too (although most free SynthEdit creations usually use CPU quite much as well).

Audio Tracks are for long wave audio tracks. Shorter clips you can always use Sampler.

Yes. But I don’t consider very sensible to put “Texas” at first on list, though I could silence glitching by turning some knobs. “Countdown” would have be better as first synth in Toxic 2. I got my Orion to play 2-3 Bach’s songs with 2 quitar synths (Plucked strings) and I had to also two Toxic2 opened too. So it is also question of tuning synths “softer”/less CPU hungry, too.

WasXT is not easy if you want to tune it to give same sound You just found in Toxic ? Well another new machine to learn..

In Finnish forum(mikseri) someone told he makes WAV’s adding one voice at a time. He adds those layer by layer. It is harder way but “CPU doesn’t glitch”.

BTW. FM-synthesis matrix it terrible complex to understand. Is there some kind of spectrum synthesis program somewhere available (free) ?

    Thanks for help,
    Mr. Kari A. Tikkanen, Finland.

    Hi,

I know this is an OLD post so you may never see this comment, but here’s hoping ;)

I’m trying to install Orion Platinum for use in WINE, and I’ve got the 7.11 patch, but it still keeps crashing. Do you know where I could find documentation such as a how-to on getting this running?

    Thanks,

    Sam

I’d recommend asking at the official forums. There are some who has setup Orion with WINE and WineASIO.

So I have Orion version 7.11 and I’m having problems with the song playlist editor. It seems that it won’t nudge over and it’s really pissing me off, especially when I zoom in to arrange my vocal takes, trying to line anything up with the beat past the first few lines really takes a too much time and effort. What can I do?
